Confucius Institute at University of Zimbabwe Celebrates Its Tenth Anniversary

On October 14th local time, the Confucius Institute at University of Zimbabwe (CIUZ) celebrated its tenth anniversary at the auditorium of the same university, with a great gathering of distinguished guests. Levi Nyagura, Vice Chancellor of the CIUZ, Huang Ping, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhang Jianming, Executive Vice Secretary of Renmin University of China and others attended and addressed the gala.

Huang Ping said in his speech that since its establishment ten years ago, the CIUZ has achieved fruitful results in spreading Chinese culture to Zimbabwean people and teaching them Chinese. More and more students from the CIUZ have acted as envoys of friendship between China and Zimbabwe and diplomats who devote themselves to the exchanges of politics, economy and culture between the two countries.

Zhang Jianming said that Renmin University of China would continue to push forward the cooperation between the two universities, enhance the cooperation in fields such as exchange of professional talents, teaching and scientific research, and cultural studies and give play to the CIUZ as an important window for strengthening the friendship and cooperation between China and Zimbabwe.

Levi Nyagura introduced that in the past 10 years, the CIUZ, as the only Confucius Institute in Zimbabwe, has become the largest and most competent institute for Chinese language teaching with the greatest number of students.

At the gala, students of the institute sang Chinese songs and performed African dances in a warm and cheerful atmosphere. Teachers and students from the teaching sites of the Confucius Institute also performed wonderful shows such as the traditional Chinese fan dance, bass drum of African style, and air whistle of Scotland style. Among them, recitation of the poetry Bringing in the Wine by the "Chinese Bridge" candidate won bursts of applause from the audience with clear pronunciation and full affection.

In the afternoon, representative teachers and students from the Confucius Institute and its teaching sites performed a parade at the University of Zimbabwe. Students held the Chinese flag and the flag of Confucius Institute and walked on the campus with infinite vigor, spreading the Chinese language in every corner of the campus.

In addition, the CIUZ also held several activities including the signing ceremony of a new teaching site and a symposium of teachers and students from the Confucius Institute.
