President of Fiji Attends Groundbreaking Ceremony of Model Confucius Institute at University of South Pacific

On October 13th, local time, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Model Confucius Institute (CI)-University of the South Pacific (USP) Project was held by Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific (CI-USP). His Excellency Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, President of Fiji, Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President of the USP, Zhang Ping, Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, and Ren Chunxia, Director of International Office of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) attended the ceremony.

In the welcoming speech, Professor Rajesh Chandra recalled the unforgettable scenes during the negotiation between the USP and the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) on jointly building the Confucius Institute with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. He pointed out the challenges that they had faced at the beginning and the achievements of the institute in the past five years. Rajesh Chandra said that the institute has played a significant role in strengthening the bond between the South-Pacific Region and China. He also expressed his gratitude to the support that the Fijian government and the Chinese Embassy in Fiji have provided to the CI-USP and the USP all these years.

His Excellency Major-General (Ret'd) Jioji Konrote noted that learning and teaching Chinese language and culture are crucial. The CI-USP works effectively as a platform to enhance friendship and cooperation between China and Fiji as well friendship and cooperation between China and the South Pacific Region. It should be considered as one of the main tools for developing a mutually beneficial and win-win relationship between Fiji and China. The ceremony not only marks the renovation and expansion of facilities of the institute but also paves the way for China and the South Pacific Region to deepen cooperation on the basis of mutual trust.

Zhang Ping in his speech recognized again the significant contributions of the institute to the people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Fiji. He said that each time, the activity held by the institute remained fresh in his memory and he would miss the institute no matter where he is. Zhang Ping ended his speech with his best wishes.

In his congratulatory letter, Qiao Jianyong, President of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, pointed out that the initiation of the Model Confucius Institute Project is another milestone of CI-USP’s development, which not only improved the teaching conditions but also symbolized the achievements in cultural exchanges between BUPT and the USP in the past five years. This means that after the five-year start-up period, the institute has entered a new stage of development and it will make greater contributions to enhancing the friendly relationship between BUPT and the USP.
