Foundation Stone-Laying Ceremony for Chinese-sponsored Confucius Institute at National University of Laos Kicks off

On September 30th, the Foundation Stone-Laying Ceremony of Chinese-sponsored Confucius Institute at National University of Laos (NUOL) was held in Vientiane, capital of Laos. Sengdeuan Lachanthaboun, Lao Minister of Education and Sports, Somsy Gnophanxay, President of NUOL, Wang Wentian, Chinese Ambassador to Laos, and local guests from all walks of life attended the ceremony.

Somsy Gnophanxay, on behalf of the NUOL, expressed his gratitude to the leaders of both sides, and to the significant contributions that China has made to Laos in terms of talent cultivation and cultural exchanges between the two countries. He believed that with the attention and support of leaders of the two countries, the Confucius Institute project will be completed successfully.

Sengdeuan Lachanthaboun said in her speech that the Confucius Institute project is a major project sponsored by China and the most advanced building in NUOL. The project demonstrates China’s support for Laos, and it is a concrete outcome of the increasingly developed and comprehensive cooperation between the two parties, the two countries and the two peoples.

Wang Wentian said that the construction of the Confucius Institute will not only significantly help to improve the teaching condition of the Confucius Institute at NUOL, but also serve as an important measure in education cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. It is hoped that with joint efforts of both sides, the Confucius Institute at NUOL will be built into a model project of promoting people-to-people exchanges between China and Laos, and enable more and more people to learn Chinese language, understand Chinese culture, make Chinese friends, and learn Chinese technology, thus contributing to economic and social development of Laos.

Xie Shangguo, President of Guangxi University for Nationalities, specially sent a congratulatory letter, in which he expressed his belief that by efforts of the colleagues from the two universities, NUOL is bound to become a sound platform for the two peoples’ friendly exchanges, to promote the common development of education, culture, art, science, technology and even economic and trade exchanges, and to make greater contributions to the traditional friendship and friendly exchanges between the two countries.

Guests laying foundation for the Confucius Institute project

On December 8th, 2016, the Chinese government signed an implementation agreement on sponsoring the Confucius Institute project at NUOL. After the completion of the project, it will provide 60 teachers and 5000 students with teaching management space and related ancillary space, including teaching area, administration area, library, multi-function hall, teacher dormitory and outdoor project, covering 14,664 square meters.
