Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary and Unveils Nameplate of Model Confucius Institute

On 27th September, local time, the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield (SCI) and the unveiling ceremony of “Model Confucius Institute” were held at Firth Court in the University of Sheffield. The event saw the presence of Keith Burnett, President of the University of Sheffield, Paul Blomfield, the Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom (UK), Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the UK, Wang Yongli, Minister Counselor of the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director-General of Hanban and others.

First, the Sheffield-China Photo Exhibition attracted the attention of the guests, through which they had a comprehensive understanding of the contributions made by the SCI as a bridge in the past decade to the cooperation between China and Sheffield in education, culture, industry, business and medical care.

In his keynote speech “Knowledge, Passion, Action”, Liu Xiaoming spoke highly of the SCI for its important role and tremendous achievements in the communication and cooperation between China and the UK and stressed that the “Model Confucius Institute” should have the ability to teach Chinese, be passionate about telling the stories of China, ,and take delight in promoting China-UK relations. He also appealed to the young people to contribute, with their vigor and talent, to China-UK “Golden Era”, to a community of shared future for mankind, and to harmonious development of human society.

In his speech, Keith Burnett, President of the University of Sheffield, highly praised the Confucius Institute for its achievements in the past decade. He said that the ten-year development of the Confucius Institute had become an epitome of what President Xi Jinping called the “Golden Era” of China-UK relations, with the institute as one of the most important achievements since China and the UK established formal diplomatic relations 45 years ago.

In his speech, Paul Blomfield, Member of the Parliament of the UK, expressed his sincere thanks to the Confucius Institute for all it has done to build understanding and communication between the peoples of Sheffield and China.

Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director-General of Hanban, said in his speech that the SCI is one of the earliest Confucius Institutes established in the UK, even in the whole of Europe. After ten-year unremitting efforts, it has developed into an important centre for Chinese teaching, Chinese exam service, cultural communication between China and UK, and Chinese business consultation in the central and northern part of the UK. It has become one of the most outstanding Confucius Institutes in the world and deserves the honor of “Model Confucius Institute”. The Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) will fully support the development of the SCI as always.

Dong Lijun, Vice President of Beijing Language and Culture University, and Fan Conglai, Secretary to President of Nanjing University, respectively delivered speeches as representatives from cooperative universities. Nick Patrick, the representative from Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, and Virginia Yip, the representative from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, also made speeches, explaining respectively how to cooperate further with the Confucius Institute in the next stage.

Later, teachers and students from the Confucius Institute entertained the audience with wonderful performances, including the graceful dance Memories of The South and the charming cheongsam show On the Other Side of the Water, expressing good wishes to the Confucius Institute for its 10th birthday.
