Chinese Culture Amazes Belarus

On September 24th, local time, the square in the downtown area of Minsk, capital of Belarus, witnessed great fanfare with the Chinese culture festival—2017 Confucius Institute Day co-organized by the Confucius Classroom in Belarusian State University of Physical Training, the Confucius Institute at Belarusian State University, the Confucius Institute at Minsk State Linguistic University, as well as the Confucius Institute of Science and Technology at Belarusian National Technical University.

It was the first time for these four Confucius Institutes/Classrooms to host such a large-scale cultural show together, attracting nearly 15,000 locals to participate in. On the main stage, Chinese national musical instruments, songs and dances, martial arts, Taichi and opera were performed one by one. These Confucius Institutes/Classrooms also set up exhibition booths to display tea art, facial makeup of opera, movable-type printing, calligraphy and Chinese wedding customs for the locals to show Chinese traditional culture. Meanwhile, the volunteers from the Confucius Institutes and the locals were kicking the shuttlecock, doing rope skipping and playing Taichi, making all the people on the square immersed in Chinese culture in golden autumn.

The Confucius Classroom at Belarusian State University of Physical Training invited a performance team playing dragon dance and lion dance from its partner university in China, Lingnan Normal University, whose marvelous performance won great applause from the audience. Moreover, the tea show and experience carried out by the Classroom furthered people's understanding of the Chinese tea culture.

The Confucius Institute at Belarusian State University launched various activities such as, Chinese calligraphy show, Chinese knot making and Chinese Character scrabble, and the institute even taught Chinese culture in the spot. All those well-designed activities highlighted interest, involvement and interaction, drawing the locals at different ages into participation, especially in the traditional Chinese wedding show. Audience not only could appreciate traditional Chinese wedding ceremony, but get a better understanding of Chinese wedding customs, such as how to send a betrothal letter, how the couple kowtowed to the Earth and the Heaven, how the couple crossed arms to sip white wines, and how the bridegroom uncovered the bride’s red silk veil.

Fully exerting its advantages on Chinese teaching and cultural activities, the Confucius Institute at Minsk State Linguistic University gave excellent performance of traditional Chinese songs, dances and erhu play, and exhibited Chinese calligraphy and paper-cut. Moreover, Chinese knowledge competition and usage of chopsticks have attracted many people.

The Confucius Institute of Science and Technology at Belarusian National Technical University made poster-boards for the event, exhibiting development and achievements of modern technology, such as Chinese high-speed railways, shared bicycles, mobile payment and unmanned drones; philosophy of Smart City; traditional Chinese compass and movable-type printing; and ink printing technology that people could experience.
