The ‘Discover China’ Cultural Activities Successfully Held at Kaiti School in Gisborne

On 11th August 2017, ‘Discover China’workshops supported by Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington were held at Kaiti School, Gisborne. Mr. Meng Foon, the mayor of Gisborne, was also present at the workshops.

This cultural activity was planned by Megan Windybank, the lead teacher of Chinese at Kaiti School and Bin Tang, Mandarin Language Assistant of Confucius Institute at Victoria University, with the support of two other MLAs Hong Bai, Yuning Long based in Gisborne.

Making Jiaozi

This day included 5 workshops: fan dancing, dumplings, painting, Tai Chi and martial arts. Mr. Fanxiao Meng, martial arts expert of CI VUW Discover China Workshop and Mr. Jiwei Fu, National Language Adviser, provided martial arts technical guidance.


Learning Fan-dance

There were around 360 students took part in this whole day activity. They have not only learnt how to make yummy dumplings but also realized the importance of team work. This activity has enhanced their understanding of China and Chinese culture.


Learning martial arts

This was the first time Chinese cultural activities had been held in Gisborne, so the teachers and students were very enthusiastic. Both the teachers and all of the students enjoyed the Chinese experience and are looking forward to next year’s ‘Discover China’ Day.
