Since the establishment in 2012, the Confucius Institute at the University of Burundi has been expanding its teaching scale, gaining greater influence and reputation in Burundi. As the number of students increases, the original teaching infrastructure is no longer able to meet the Chinese teaching demand. Therefore, with the endeavors from all parties, the Confucius Institute at the University of Burundi succeeded in its application to become a Model Confucius Institute in 2015. Over the past five years, the Confucius Institute has sent over 70 students to China to learn Chinese and also delivered a large amount of excellent graduates to work at Chinese enterprises in Burundi.

The completion of the teaching building of the Confucius Institute will be more conducive to the promotion of Chinese language and to providing better learning conditions for the local students. Pr Gaspard Banyankimbona, Rector of the University of Burundi and Rosalie Bikorindagara, Vice Rector of the University attended the foundation stone laying ceremony for the teaching building of the Confucius Institute.
