—4th Confucius Institute International Music Summer Camp "Chinese Music Summer School" Opens in Beijing

On the evening of July 3rd, the opening concert of the Confucius Institute International Music Summer Camp—"Chinese Music Summer School" was held at the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM). The summer camp will be held from July 3rd to July 16th, bringing together over 100 Chinese and oversea experts and scholars, first-class performers at the national level and outstanding teachers and students from the CCOM as well as more than 60 teachers and students majoring in music or with music expertise from the United States, Canada, South Africa, Denmark and other countries.

At the opening concert, the teachers and students of the CCOM played the classic works of chamber music which combine Chinese and western elements as well as invited works of the global premiere of the Music Confucius Institute at the Danish Academy of Music. A host of musical works won the audience's warm applause such as Dunhuang, Capriccio, In the Silence, Jade, Tipsy Dancing Devarajas, as well as other works composed with the themes in Andersen Fairy Tale by the young composers including Impression of Fairy Tales, the Little Match Girl, the Emperor’s New Clothes, Sent Back to Odense.

On July 5th, a sodality for teachers and students from various countries was held in the concert hall. Prof. Liu Yuening, Director of the Center for the Exchange and Experience of Chinese and Foreign Music Cultures and Director of Music Confucius Institute (MCI) Office, said that the Confucius Institute International Music Summer Camp—"Chinese Music Summer School" is a high-end academic activity of international education and exchange showcasing the charm and cultural beauty of Chinese music from multiple perspectives.

Prof. Ye Xiaogang, Vice President of the CCOM and Chairman of the Chinese Musicians Association, said in the speech that after two-week diversified courses offered by the Chinese Music Summer School, all the students will certainly have a more direct feeling and understanding toward Chinese musical culture.”

With the support of the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban, the 4th Confucius Institute International Music Summer Camp — "Chinese Music Summer School" was sponsored by the CCOM and organized by the Center for the Exchange and Experience of Chinese and Foreign Music Cultures and MCI Office. During this event, there were more than 50 events covering six series, namely lunchtime demonstrating concert, lectures of music experts, masters’ workshops, Chinese musical instrument workshops, cultural visiting tours, special performances for study results reporting and closing concerts.

Since 2014, the Confucius Institute International Music Summer Camp—"Chinese Music Summer School" has been successfully held for three times and altogether invited 166 teachers and students majoring in music or with music expertise sent from 11 prestigious Confucius Institutes in 8 countries of 5 continents to visit China. They learned Chinese musical instruments, experienced Chinese culture and shared the process of understanding Chinese music from knowing to loving and to cross-cultural understanding. Just as Guo Shulan, Secretary of the Party Committee of the CCOM, said in her speech at the opening concert, “Through the Confucius Institute International Music Summer Camp, a worldwide educational and exchanging platform, the diversified development and prosperity of the world music culture will definitely be promoted.”
