Confucius Institute at University of Melbourne Holds 10th Anniversary Celebration

On June 28th local time, the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia was held in the Graduate House at the university. Distinguished guests including Joel Backwell, Director of the Department of Education and Training and Director of the Department of Early Childhood Education and School Education in Victoria State, Simon Evans, Vice President of the University of Melbourne, Chen Jun, President of Nanjing University in China, Huang Guobin, Acting Consul General of the Chinese Consulate-general in Melbourne, Zhao Jiang, Education Counselor of the Chinese Consulate-general attended and addressed the event.

The celebration kicked off amid the melodious music of Guzheng. Joel Backwell highly praised in his speech the efforts made by the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne and the local Chinese Language Teachers Association in the events such as the "Chinese bridge for secondary school students", "Chinese talent competition for elementary school students" as well as the "Chinese reading competition for primary and secondary school". Joel Backwell also fully affirmed the leading role of the nine Confucius classrooms affiliated to the institute in Chinese language teaching.

Huang Guobin said in his speech that as the first Confucius Institute set up in the state of Victoria, the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne, along with the Confucius classrooms affiliated have made outstanding contributions in the process of Chinese language education and Chinese culture promotion in Victoria, having a demonstration effect.

Simon Evans, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, expressed his gratitude to the Victorian state government for its strong support for the development of the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne and fully affirmed the teams that made positive contributions to the development of the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne in his speech.

Chen Jun, President of Nanjing University pointed out in his speech that currently, with the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Australia and the friendly and close cooperative relationship between Jiangsu Province and the state of Victoria as well as the strong support from Nanjing University and the University of Melbourne, the development of the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne enjoys the advantages of the time, the terrain and unity with the people. Chen Jun sincerely praised the virtuous team spirit of the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne.

The Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Glyn Davis, President of the University of Melbourne respectively sent congratulatory letters to express their full recognition of the bridge role of the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne in the China-Australia cooperation and exchanges. They also encouraged the institute to make greater efforts and play a more remarkable role.

Meanwhile, the institute’s new site held a nameplate-unveiling ceremony. Chen Jun and his delegation attended one of the activities of the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute—"Melbourne in My Eyes" photography competition exhibition and he held talks with the teachers and volunteers of the institute.

Vice President of the University of Melbourne and the former President in charge of the University of Melbourne, representatives of the state government of Victoria, the former foreign director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne, Head of the Asialink Center, teacher representatives of the Chinese Language Association of Victoria State, the directors of the other three Confucius Institutes in Victoria State, Pu Lijie, Assistant to President of Nanjing University and others guests attended the event.
