Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe Visits Confucius Institute and Classroom in Edmonton and Holds Lectures on Peking Opera

On May 31st and June 2nd, local time, the performing artists from Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe in Beijing visited the Confucius Institute in Edmonton, the Confucius Classroom in Ross Sherpard High School and in M.E Lazerte High School, giving three brilliant lectures on Peking Opera respectively to the local fans, teachers and students of over one thousand people. Rich knowledge of Peking Opera and interesting on-site interactions were warmly received by the audience, teachers and students.

The Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe paid a visit to the Confucius Classroom in Ross Sherpard High School on the morning of May 31st, showing the fascination of Peking Opera, the quintessence of Chinese culture, to over 600 teachers and students from four Confucius Classrooms nearby. That night, members of the troupe introduced to over 100 local fans the art of Peking Opera in the auditorium of the Confucius Institute in Edmonton by taking examples of some arias.

Mei Wei, the great grandson of Peking Opera performing master Mei Lanfang, explained to all the participants the basic knowledge of Peking Opera such as the characters in it and the dispositions of the characters that the facial masks stand for, and the participants all had a preliminary understanding of the Peking Opera. The Dan, the female character in Peking Opera and Wusheng, the character who is adept at Chinese Kungfu in Peking Opera, showed their respective classical actions and invited students to imitate on stage and feel the charm of Peking Opera. Under the guidance of the troupe members, participants on site played traditional Chinese musical instruments such as Erhu, Beijing urheen and Bangu.

The Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe visited the Confucius Classroom in M.E Lazerte High School on June 2nd and the auditorium was fully packed. Kim Backs, Principal of M.E. LaZerte High School, in his speech thanked the Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe and the Confucius Institute in Edmonton for providing an opportunity for students to learn and know about traditional Chinese culture.

In the past few years, the Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe has made three visits to Edmonton, where they revealed the glamor of splendid Chinese traditions to local Peking Opera fans and students. The lecture on Peking Opera co-hosted by the Confucius Institute in Edmonton not only spread the knowledge of Peking Opera but also enabled participants to interactively experience the tunes and actions of the Peking Opera as an art form and to enjoy its charm. This will play a positive role in stimulating the interest and enthusiasm of local people and students about learning Chinese and knowing about Chinese culture.
