First “Belt and Road” International Forum on China-Serbia Cooperation Held in Belgrade

On June 6th local time, the first “Belt and Road” International Forum on China-Serbia Cooperation, co-sponsored by the Institute of Marxist Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Confucius Institute at University of Novi Sad in Serbia and organized by Sino-Serbia Cultural Exchange Association, was held in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Josip Joška Broz, Chairman of the Communist Party of Serbia, Ivan Djokovic, Vice President of the Provincial Government of AP Vojvodina, Deng Chundong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute of Marxist Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as well as more than 70 scholars and experts from China and Serbia discussed how to enhance China-Serbia cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Deng Chundong elaborated the historical foundation of the friendship between China and Serbia at the opening ceremony. He noted that advocated by President Xi Jinping, China-Serbia relations have been further improved these years. He also hoped all delegates will make in-depth exchanges, working together to contribute ideas and exert efforts to China-Serbia cooperation.

Ivana Sekerus, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at University of Novi Sad pointed out, the Belt and Road Initiative is the crystallization of advanced thoughts and practical example for international connection and communication, which is not just conducive to China’s neighboring countries, but also is of great significance to solve the current issues that the global and regional economics confronted.

Josip Joška Broz said in his speech that the Chinese people have always been Serbian people’s friend, and Serbian people will never forget the history. He hoped that China and Serbia will experience increasingly sound economic development and an everlasting friendship between the two peoples.

Ivan Djokovic was highly optimistic about the Belt and Road Initiative and the cooperation prospects between Serbia and China. He introduced resource advantage of Vojvodina in his speech, and hoped that more cooperation with the Chinese government and enterprises will be fostered. Speaking highly of the achievements the Confucius Institute at the University of Novi Sad has made, he thanked the institute for providing a platform for the Serbian people to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture.

Later, centering on the Belt and Road Initiative and cooperation between China and Serbia, scholars had in-depth discussion on topics including foreign policies of China in Central and Eastern Europe, exchange and cooperation in think tanks, publication and cultural exchange between China and Central and Eastern Europe, and Serbia’s advantages and disadvantages in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Zhao Youhua, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Novi Sad, expressed in the concluding remarks that the international forum has provided an exchange platform for Chinese and Serbian scholars and is conducive to the promotion of mutual understanding and further exchanges between the two sides in the future.
