Confucius Institute at ULB Holds Anniversary Reception—Forum on "Language, Culture and New Media Transmission"

On May 8th, 2017 local time, the Confucius Institute at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium and the ULB co-hosted a lunch reception to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the establishment of Confucius Institute. Over 140 guests attended the reception, including Prof. Yvon Englert, ULB Rector, Chen Dong, Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Belgium, Li Jianmin, Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Mission to the European Union, Tao Hongjian, Counselor for Educational Affairs of the Chinese Embassy in Belgium, Prof. Wang Rongming, Vice President of East China Normal University (ECNU).

Prof. Yvon Englertt reviewed in his speech the friendly cooperation course between the ULB and ECNU. Speaking highly of the development of the Confucius Institute at the ULB over the past year, he said that the university would continue to support its work and promote the communication and cooperation between both universities on the platform of the institute. Minister-Counselor Chen Dong hoped to strengthen the cooperation among the six Confucius Institutes in Belgium and jointly forge them into distinctive ones.

As an important activity of the anniversary celebration of the institute, the Forum on "Language, Culture and New Media Transmission" was organized at ULB and chaired by Prof. Vanessa Frangville, Foreign Director of the institute. Marie-Soleil Frère, ULB Vice-Rector for International Relations and Prof. Wang Rongming addressed the opening ceremony respectively.

Marie-Soleil Frère made affirmative remarks on what the Confucius Institute had done over the past year, such as Chinese teaching and organizing cultural activities. He expressed that the ULB would continue supporting the institute. Prof. Wang Rongming expressed in his speech that ECNU would spare no efforts to support various activities of the institute to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two universities. He also wished the Confucius Institute a wonderful future.

The Forum was carried out in a form in which a Chinese professor gave a lecture and a Belgian professor asked questions and made comments about the lecture. The six professors were divided into three groups. Firstly, Prof. Wu Yongyi at the International College of Chinese Studies of ECNU gave a report entitled Textbook Compilation under the Circumstances of Chinese as a Foreign Language—A Case Study of MÉTHOE DE CHINOIS and Prof. Xu Jianping at Department of Translation of ULB made the comment; then, Prof. Yuan Xiaoyi from School of Foreign Languages, ECNU presented a report entitled "French Literature Translation in China in the 21st Century" and Prof. Vanessa Frangville of Department of Chinese, ULB made the comment; and finally, Prof. Lv Xinyu at School of Communication of ECNU gave a report entitled "Future Archeology in ‘New Media’ Era" and Prof. David Domingo from Department of Communication of ULB made the comment. All attendees really benefited a lot from the reports and the comments.
