The Confucius Institute at La Trobe University, in cooperation  with Melbourne NORTH Link, has played a connecting role in the successful visit of a business delegation of food, fibre and beverage companies in Melbourne’s North to Chongqing from 1st – 7th  May 2017, strengthening economic and trade communication between Melbourne’s North and Chongqing.

The week in Chongqing witnessed highlights of this tour as follows. The group visited the Chongqing Lianglu Cuntan Free Trade Port Area, Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Zone, Chongqing Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation Group, and Tianyou Yogurt. The delegation also met representatives from Hong Kong Land (major developer of Chinese shopping centres), Yuou Online E-commerce Group, Puhui Supermarket Group (1,000 store chain, increasing to 3,000 stores) and Austrade Chengdu. Among fruitful results of one-week business tour are discussion of joint innovation parks in Melbourne’s North and Chongqing (possible focus on food, beverage and fibre processing), potential of Australian store in Chongqing’s bonded zone, and intra-delegation B2B opportunities.

Melbourne’s NORTH Link Delegation consists of NORTH Link, Heaven’s Bakehouse, McMullin Group, Super Sprout, and Merino and Jumbuck Australia Pty Ltd. Chris James, the delegation leader, says that the Confucius Institute at La Trobe University was particularly instrumental in making this visit happen, and hope Confucius Institute will deepen relationship and explore wider rollout of Chinese cultural and language competency to Melbourne’s North businesses. This visit to Chongqing is a great move toward promoting economic development and trade between Melbourne's North and Chongqing, as well as between Australia and China.
