2017“Chinese Bridge”Spanish Finals concluded in Valencia

The Spanish Finals of "Chinese Bridge" of the XVI session for college students and X session for secondary school students were concluded in the Palau of Music on May 7th, 2017. 14 contestants from six local preliminary contests organized by Confucius Institutes throughout Spain exhibited themselves competitively. In the end, Tran Thuy Tiene from the University of Las Palmas won the first prize in the college group and Gonzalo Guerrero Rodriguez from Barcelona Confucius Institute and Paula Victoria Jimenez from Madrid Confucius Institute won the first and prizes respectively in the secondary group and they will take part in the global finals in China, representing Spain.

The finals of this year were supported by the Chinese Embassy as usual and Lü Fan,Chinese Ambassador to Spain, was present at the site with Counselor Liu Wenqiu and Director Zhong Xiwei from Chinese Embassy. Valencia local people were also enthusiastically involved in the game. Vice President of the Autonomous Community of Valencia, Mónica Oltra and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Valencia, Guillermo Palao attended the contest. Lü Fan made a speech and spoke highly of the positive impact and social effect of the "Chinese Bridge" Games on Chinese learning in the region. In her warm speech, Ms. Mónica Oltra pointed out that the Confucius Institutes have greatly upgraded the level of teaching Chinese as a second language in Spain. At present, Chinese is now the top with the fastest growing number of learners among foreign languages in Spain.

The 2017 competition was hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia and the Chinese Embassy in Spain. The day before the contest, Ambassador Lü Fan attended a high level forum as a part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia. The forum was chaired by Dr. Esteban Morcillo Sánchez, President of the University of Valencia and Chairman of the Board of Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia and President of the University of Valencia. Vicente Andreu, Director of Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia gave a review of the development of the Confucius Institute over the past decade. Then Lü Fan made a keynote speech on China's economic and social development, diplomatic work, and the 10th anniversary celebration of the Confucius Institute. He gave a sketch of China's achievements in poverty alleviation, Belt and Road Initiative and diplomacy in recent years, and made a high degree of recognition for the achievements of the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia in the past ten years. Esteban Morcillo Sánchez, wishes the Confucius Institute to create a history of the millennium. Valencia Mayor, Mr. Joan Ribó and other friendly people from all walks of life also attended the forum.

The competence of contestants has increased year by year, the influence has expanded greatly, and now they have become an event that Chinese learners highly anticipate every year.
