Teachers and Students of Confucius Institute at University of Liberia Receive Praise from Liberian President for Their Performance at Ground-breaking Ceremony for Project of Ministerial Complex

On Apr. 27th, 2017, local time, teachers and students of the Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia performed at the ground-breaking ceremony for the project of the Ministerial Complex, receiving praise from Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Their performance featured Liberian tambourine and dance, which showcased a little of the best the locals could offer-their diligence and kindness as well as their longing for a better life. Teachers and students also presented the wonderful “Lion Dance”, vividly depicting the “king of the jungle”, for its bold and uninhibited charisma. The audience cheered at seeing the bilingual banner “Long Live China & Libra Friendship” spat out of the lion’s mouth.

The students of Kingdom Heritage Model School subordinated to the Confucius Institute) presented the musical Mushroom-picking Gals. The delightful rhythm, together with kids’ joyful expressions and skillful moves won consistent applause from the audience.

After the show, President Sirleaf was accompanied by Zhang Yue, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, to greet the crew from the Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia. He showed full recognition and appreciation for their hard work and fantastic performance. The president said to Dr. Huang Boqing, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, “Their performance was perfect. The institute has done very meaningful things and contributed to the progressive friendship and rapport between Liberia and China. We do appreciate it!”

Sirleaf was delighted to know that the Confucius Institute at the university offers Chinese language programs at primary and secondary schools in Monrovia. She said these Chinese language and culture learners could boost friendship between the two countries and engage in realizing world peace and friendship.

Ambassador Zhang showed great respect for all the efforts the institute has made involving art performances dedicated to Chinese companies in the country as well as the efforts made to promote Chinese culture as well as all kinds of cultural exchanges between the two countries.

The construction project of Ministerial Complex is one of the largest China-aided projects in Liberia so far. It effectively promotes government level cooperation between China and Liberia as well as energizes bilateral relations and cooperation in economy and trade. The preferential loan for the project is offered by the Export-Import Bank of China, and contracted by Jiangsu Provincial Construction Group.

Guests who also attended the ceremony included Vice President of Liberia Joseph Boakai,representatives of Chinese enterprises, local residents, and teachers and students of the Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia. The event was covered by dozens of local news media outlets.
