Confucius Institute at University of Valencia Celebrates 10th Anniversary

On May 6th, 2017 local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia of Spain held its 10th anniversary celebration. Many distinguished guests from various social circles attended the event, including Joan Ribó, Mayor of Valencia, Joan Calabuig, Diplomatic Representative of the Regional Government of Valencia to EU, Esteban Morcillo, Principal of the University of Valencia (UV), Guillermo Palao, Vice Principal (International Relations) of the University of Valencia, Lv Fan, Chinese Ambassador to Spain, and Liu Wenqiu, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Spain.

At 6:30 p.m., the activity kicked off at the historic and ancient La Nau university building. It was hosted by the university’s Principal Prof. Esteban Morcillo. He firstly extended welcome to all the guests present, and thanked in particular directors and delegates of other sister Confucius Institutes in Spain for their attendance. He also expressed his gratitude to all staff and friends for their support, assistance and dedication in the past ten years.

Joan Calabuig, Diplomatic Representative of the Regional Government of Valencia to EU was the first to deliver speech. He said that, in recent months, Valencia and China have made great progress in bilateral exchanges, which are closely linked with the efforts devoted by Ambassador Lv Fan. He pointed that, in addition to the great achievements in the areas of trade and economy between Valencia and China, the Confucius Institute at UV has also played a leading role in promoting Chinese culture locally.

Joan Ribó, Mayor of Valencia, said in his speech that in the past ten years, the faculty of the Confucius Institute at UV has remained unshaken during all challenges they have faced. As mayor, he has always attached great importance to the work of language and culture education and hopes his city can make people from different countries and different places of origin feel at home. Ribó also spoke highly of the great contributions made by the institute to Valencia’s role in the "Silk Road-Belt and Road".

Vicente Andreu, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at UV also delivered a wonderful speech. He first introduced the history of the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia and its achievements in the past decade. Andreu expressed his gratitude to the Chinese Embassy in Spain, the Confucius Institute Headquarters / Hanban, Northeast Normal University and all the teachers and friends who had worked for the institute. "Many hands make work light," Andreu conveyed his feelings by the Chinese idiom. He also used another idiom "Read ten thousand books and walk ten thousand miles" to encourage the future development of the Confucius Institute.

Lv Fan, Chinese Ambassador to Spain made an important speech. He first thanked all teachers and students of the Confucius Institute at UV, and stressed the importance of cultural exchanges between China and the West by quoting President Xi Jinping’s words “cultural confidence.” Mr. Lv illustrated with numbers the efforts made by China in actively expanding its opening up policy, contributing to the world’s economic development, vigorously developing tourism and effectively combating poverty. He quoted Confucius' famous words to encourage people to be courageous in overcoming difficulties. Meanwhile, he pointed out China's determination and confidence in transforming its role from a world factory to a world market.

“With more Confucius Institutes being established in Spanish cities and close cultural exchanges between the two countries forming, more and more Spanish people will get to know and understand China, whether it is from the ancient Chinese culture, movies, music, or from the works of Mo Yan, winner of the Nobel Prize of Literature”, he concluded. He received applause from the audience after the speech. All leaders took pictures at the front stage and the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Confucius Institute at the UV came to a successful conclusion.
