The First Confucius Institute in Suriname Holds Unveiling Ceremony
On Feb. 16th, local time, the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Institute at Anton de Kom University of Suriname was held. This is the first Confucius Institute in Suriname, which is co-established by Anton de Kom University of Suriname and Confucius Institute Headquarters. Its Chinese partner university is Zhejiang Sci-Tech University.

Ashwin Adhin, Vice President of Suriname, Patrick Pengel, Acting Minister of Education, Science and Culture and Minister of Health of Suriname, Mike Noersalim, Minister of Home Affairs of Suriname, Micheil Raafenbert, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Suriname and other Surinamese governmental officials, H.E. Zhang Jinxiong, Chinese Ambassador to Suriname, Jack Menke, President of Anton de Kom University of Suriname, Chen Jianyong, Vice President of Zhejiang Sci-tech University, ambassadors of other countries to Suriname, teachers and students of the two universities and others attended the ceremony.

In his speech, Adhin expressed his congratulation on the establishment of the Confucius Institute at Anton de Kom University of Suriname. He noted that for many years, overseas Chinese in Surinam have made great contributions to the economic and social development of Suriname and they share brother-like relations with ethnic groups in the country. Chinese culture has been an important part of cultural diversity in Suriname. People of Suriname can learn a lot from traditional Chinese virtues including forging ahead, diligence, enduring hardship, and innovation. The establishment of the Confucius Institute is a milestone for people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Suriname, which will build a bridge for mutual learning between the Chinese and Surinamese civilizations and deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.
The Confucius Institute Headquarters sent a congratulatory message. It points out that friendly exchanges between the two peoples have enjoyed a long history. Anton de Kom University of Suriname devotes itself to training talents with global vision and vigorously promotes cross-cultural communication and cooperation, and the establishment of the Confucius Institute will inject new impetus and vitality to realize this plan. It is believed that with joint efforts of the two countries, the Confucius Institute can be an important platform for teachers, students and other people in Suriname and even the Caribbean area to learn Chinese and know about China, which will make positive contributions to the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and the development of cultural diversity around the world.

Zhang noted that since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Suriname 40 years ago, bilateral relations are deepening with fruitful results from pragmatic cooperation and vibrant people-to-people and cultural exchanges. There are more and more people of different ethnic groups in Suriname become interested in China and its culture. The establishment of the Confucius Institute in Suriname is not only to inherit, carry forward and share the splendid Chinese ideology and culture, but also to reflect the good wishes of the Chinese people to strengthen communication and make joint progress in harmony with the Surinamese people. Zhang was confident that the Confucius Institute at Anton de Kom University of Suriname would coordinate resources of different sides and actively figure out a schooling pattern that suits Suriname’s local features, so as to open a gateway for the Surinamese people, teenagers in particular, to learn Chinese and enjoy Chinese culture, train more envoys to spread the friendship between China and Suriname, and inject new impetus into the development of China-Suriname relations and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Pengel noted that exchanges between Suriname and China enjoys a time-honored history, and such fields in Suriname as language, culture, food and entertainment are strongly influenced by the Chinese civilization. At present, “Chinese fever” around the world is in the ascendant, which reflects the world’s strong interest in understanding and knowing about China and also shows its admiration for China’s development achievements. It is believed that the Confucius Institute at Anton de Kom University of Suriname will become an important window for Suriname to have in-depth knowledge about the Chinese culture and boost bilateral cultural communication and exchanges.

During the ceremony, teachers and students from Anton de Kom University of Suriname and Zhejiang Sci-tech University also gave such excellent performances as singing and dancing, Kung Fu, traditional Chinese tea art and catwalk show, which earned endless applause and brought the event to a climax.
