Joyful Celebrations of the Lantern Festival at Confucius Classroom at the Jagiellonian College in Torun, Poland

At 12pm (UTC+01:00) on February 11th, accompanied by the traditional Spring Festival music, a spectacular dragon dance parade was presented to the locals of Torun, the hometown of Nicolaus Copernicus, catching the eyes of many residents and visitors. This marks the beginning of “Welcome the Chinese New year and Celebrate the Lantern Festival” celebrations, held by the Confucius Classroom at the Jagiellonian College.

Up to 200 people attended the celebration, including Mrs Cai Lian, Chancellor of Cultural Affairs of the Chinese Embassy in Poland, Mr. Xu Jianguo, Consul of the Chinese Consulate-General in Gdansk, Poland, Mr. Zhang Ruoyu, Attaché of Cultural Affairs of the Chinese Embassy in Poland, Mr. Li Qikun, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom at Vistula University, leaders of the Jagiellonian College, the coordinator of the Confucius Classroom at the Jagiellonian College, Chinese students, Polish residents and students of the Classroom.

Followed by the parade, various Spring Festival cultural experience activities were held at the Jagiellonian College. Activities such as Chinese calligraphy, Chinese paper-cutting, shadowboxing teaching and game competitions were open to locals of different age and cultural backgrounds in various venues. Mrs Wang Ruoxuan, the teacher of the Classroom, presented an open class, on which she introduced customs of Chinese New Year, knowledge of Modern China, characteristics of Chinese language and characters, etc. She also taught the audience to say “hello”, “thank you” and “happy new year” in Chinese and showed them how to write 15 Chinese characters. On the event, many locals said, “it’s fun to learn Chinese”, “Chinese is not as difficult as I imagine.” In the following art performance, songs such as “Happy New Year” presented by kindergarten children in the Chinese class, “Jasmine Flower”, “Tian Mi Mi” and “Friends” by the class of middle school students and “the Moon Represents my Love” by the adult class won rounds of applause, bringing the event to its climax.

It is reported that this " Welcome the Chinese New year and Celebrate the Lantern Festival” celebrations will last a week, in addition to the parades and performances on 11th, we will also organize the lecture of Chinese Medicine , appreciation of Chinese Movie, competition of Chinese Table Games and sharing of traveling in China on 13th to 16th afternoon at the Jagiellonian College. These activities gave Polish citizens an excellent opportunity to learn Chinese culture, the charm of which is more directly felt through such celebrations of traditional Chinese festivals.
