The First Confucius Institute in Mauritius Unveils
On Dec. 14th, local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius held its unveiling ceremony. As the first Confucius Institute in Mauritius, it was jointly established by the University of Mauritius and the Confucius Institute Headquarters / Hanban, and organized by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University.
Barlen Vypoory, Acting President of Mauritius and H.E. Li Li, Chinese Ambassador to Mauritius jointly unveiled the plate of the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius. Nearly 300 people including those from the Mauritian government as well as Mauritian academia, and overseas Chinese attended the ceremony.
Pravind Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Mauritius and Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, President of Mauritius sent messages of congratulation for the ceremony. Prime Minister Jugnauth expressed his appreciation in the letter to the Chinese government for actively supporting Mauritius to establish the Confucius Institute, and congratulated Mauritius on joining the big family of over 500 Confucius institutes in the world. He believed that the newly-established Confucius Institute will further deepen the brotherly friendship between the two countries. In the message of congratulation, President Fakim also expressed her warm congratulations on the establishment of the Confucius Institute and her expectation for the ever-developing Confucius Institute.

In his speech, Acting President Vypoory spoke highly of the Confucian values such as honoring teachers and respecting their teaching, courtesy, righteousness, and benevolence. He believed that the young people in Mauritius could learn from these values and share the experience. He also expected the Confucius Institute to not only promote Chinese language teaching, but also bring the excellent traditional Chinese culture to Mauritius.

Ambassador Li Li congratulated the two universities that co-built the Confucius Institute on their significant achievements, and thanked friends from all walks of life in China and Mauritius for actively contributing to the establishment of the Confucius Institute. According to Ambassador Li, in recent years, the two countries have seen frequent bilateral exchanges in various areas, fruitful achievements from bilateral cooperation and growing personnel exchanges. Friends from Mauritius have been enthusiastic in learning the Chinese language and are willing to learn more about the Chinese society, economy and culture. It is hoped that the two universities can make joint efforts to give full play to their own advantages and run the Confucius Institute well, so as to make active contributions to the friendship between the two countries.

As partner universities, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University and the University of Mauritius expressed that taking the Confucius Institute as a platform, they would further deepen academic exchanges in various fields, enhance mutual learning and build a closer cooperative partnership.
In recent years, exchanges between China and Mauritius have grown more and more frequent in various fields. The Mauritian people have increasing need and enthusiasm to learn Chinese and know more about the Chinese culture, while the Confucius Institute is an important platform for spreading traditional Chinese culture. The establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius represents an important achievement in cultural exchanges between the two countries, which will play an active role in promoting and deepening bilateral friendly exchanges and cooperation in various fields, as well as contributing to the development of the friendship between the two countries.
