First Confucius Institute in Venezuela officially inaugurated

On the morning of December 16, Confucius Institute at Bolivarian University of Venezuela, the first one in Venezuela, was officially inaugurated. The Confucius Institute is co-founded by Bolivarian University of Venezuela and Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), with Changzhou University as its partner institution.

Around 500 delegates including Ricardo Menéndez, Vice-President of Council of Ministers of Venezuela and Minister of Planning; Maryann Hanson, President of Bolivarian University of Venezuela; Zhao Bentang, Chinese Ambassador to Venezuela; Pu Yuzhong, Secretary of CPC Committee at Changzhou University, and guests from all walks of life attended the ceremony. Various mainstream media such as Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, Panorama News and Television in Venezuela reported this event.

Ricardo Menéndez pointed out in his speech that the Confucius Institute at Bolivarian University of Venezuela served as a pioneer and window for China-Venezuela educational cooperation after the two countries became comprehensive strategic partners with mutual trust. He highlighted that heads of governmental departments shall play a leading role by taking the first Chinese language courses. In the meanwhile, the Venezuelan government shall establish a work center to guarantee the operation of the Confucius Institute and solve problems in the development of the Confucius Institute in a timely manner, so as to facilitate its sound development. He also expected China to build more Confucius Institutes in Venezuela by stating that “even though it takes us seven years of unremitting efforts to set up the first Confucius Institute, we plan to launch four teaching sites within one year”.

Maryann Hanson extended sincere thanks to the establishment of the Confucius Institute and the hard work of Changzhou University in preparing for the opening ceremony of the Confucius Institute. She noted that Chinese language teaching has advanced by leaps and bounds in Venezuela, which attests to the eagerness of Venezuelan citizens to learn Chinese culture. Bolivarian University of Venezuela would like to conduct multilevel exchange and cooperation with Changzhou University in various fields, jointly undertake the sacred mission to develop the Confucius Institute and cultivate Chinese talents for Venezuelan Economic Exclusion Zone, schools incorporated into the National Plan of Venezuela and the Orinoco Oil Belt.

Zhao Bentang stressed in his speech that the establishment of the first Confucius Institute in Venezuela would open new prospects for China-Venezuela cultural and educational exchange and cooperation, and enable local people to have first-hand experience of the Chinese culture. He wished Changzhou University and Bolivarian University to reinforce inter-institutional cooperation, give full play to their distinctive advantages and accelerate mutual development by virtue of the Confucius Institute. He indicated that with sincere cooperation and joint efforts of all sides, the Confucius Institute at Bolivarian University would definitely develop into a high-level institute with distinctive features and become another bridge for China-Venezuela cultural and educational exchanges.

Pu Yuzhong claimed that Changzhou University, a higher education institution featured by petroleum and petro-chemistry, also set up a major in Spanish. Changzhou University was both confident in and capable of making the most of the advantages in its programs and disciplines to ensure a sound development of the Confucius Institute, to further China-Venezuela cooperation in fields of Chinese language teaching, petroleum and petrochemical industry, energy and chemical industry, and international trade, and to carry out scientific research docking and university-industry-research cooperation with higher education institutions including Bolivarian University and research institutions, so as to promote cultural and educational exchange and integration between the two countries and contribute to building a harmonious world.

It is reported that 302 students have registered for Chinese language courses at the Confucius Institute after the registration system opened for less than one week.
