Vice-Chancellor of London South Bank University and Chair of the Board of Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine, London David Phoenix wins 2016 Chinese Government Friendship Award
On the afternoon of September 29th, the grand ceremony for the 2016 Chinese Government Friendship Award was held at the Zhongnanhai leadership compound, where Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai bestowed the Friendship Awards on 50 foreign experts from 18 countries across the globe. On the afternoon of September 30th, Premier Li Keqiang had a cordial meeting with the award winners in the Great Hall of the People. Prof. David Phoenix, Vice-Chancellor of London South Bank University and Chair of the Board of the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine, London, received the honor.
Prof. David Phoenix showed great enthusiasm for educational and cultural exchanges between China and the UK. He played an active role in helping the Confucius Institute conduct its work during the period when he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Central Lancashire. After being appointed as Vice-Chancellor of London South Bank University, he assumed the position of Chair of the Board of the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine, London and vigorously promoted the work of the Confucius Institute on all fronts, having made significant contributions in such aspects as integrating the Confucius Institute into its host university and the local community, developing characteristic construction and brand building, facilitating the transmission of Chinese language and Chinese culture as well as reinforcing cooperation and academic exchanges with Chinese universities and enterprises. He incorporated the development of the Confucius Institute into the development strategy of the university, yielding excellent results in the development scale of the Confucius Institute, school-running characteristics, high-level projects and academic studies by virtue of scientific leadership style and remarkable leadership skills. Under his leadership, the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine, London, won the title of “Model Confucius Institute”, the first one receiving the accolade in the UK. In September, 2015, Vice Premier Liu Yandong cut the ribbon for the Model Confucius Institute during her visit to the UK.
Prof. David Phoenix currently serves as an Academician of the British Academy of Social Sciences and holds such posts as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the Royal Society of Biology, and the Royal Society of Chemistry as well as a Research Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
The “Friendship Award” is the highest award from the Chinese government for foreign experts in recognition of their outstanding contributions to China’s modernization construction and the cause of reform and opening up. Recommended by the host institutions, local governments and relevant ministries of the State Council, the award winners are voted in accordance with strict procedures by the grand jury for the “Friendship Award” organized by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. Every year, 50 winners are selected for the award.
