Confucius Institute for Scotland in the University of Edinburgh celebrates its tenth anniversary of establishment

On September 19th, the Confucius Institute for Scotland in the University of Edinburgh, UK, held the nameplate unveiling ceremony for the “Model Confucius Institute”, the tenth anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Confucius Institute for Scotland and the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new building for the Confucius Institute at Edinburgh, Capital of Scotland.

While addressing the opening ceremony, Mr. Timothy O'Shea, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, noted that the Confucius Institute for Scotland in the University of Edinburgh was one of the earlier members of the big family of over 500 Confucius Institutes around the globe. The Confucius Institute for Scotland has been growing stronger and a new campus is presently established, thanks to the strong support of Hanban and the government of Scotland for the Confucius Institute. The University of Edinburgh can play a vital role in facilitating world peace, cultural exchanges, foreign language learning and mutual understanding.

Mr. Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director General of Hanban, read out a congratulatory letter from Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban. In her message, Madam Xu Lin pointed out that the Confucius Institute for Scotland was the first Confucius Institute in Scotland and also one of the best in the world. Over the past decade, the Confucius Institute for Scotland has accomplished pioneering work, striven for constant innovation, offered a series of characteristic courses on language, culture and business and held a wide array of high-quality cultural activities, making great contributions to stimulating educational and cultural exchanges between Scotland and China.

Then, Mr. Timothy O'Shea and Mr. Ma Jianfei unveiled the nameplate “Model Confucius Institute” for the Confucius Institute for Scotland in the University of Edinburgh.

Mr. Timothy O'Shea; Mr. David Clive Wilson with Wei Yixin as his Chinese name, President of the Scotland China Education Network (SCEN) and former Governor of Hong Kong; Mr. Wang Yongli, Minister Counsellor for Education at the Chinese Embassy in the UK; Mr. Pan Xinchun, Consul General of China in Edinburgh and Mr. Zhou Yaming, Assistant to President of Fudan University cut the ribbon for the new campus of the Confucius Institute for Scotland.

Since its establishment in 2007, the Confucius Institute for Scotland, jointly built by the University of Edinburgh and Fudan University, has received the accolade of “Outstanding Confucius Institute” for six times in total and won the title of “Model Confucius Institute” in December, 2015, by virtue of its sound operation and remarkable achievements.
