Confucius Institute at the University of Felix Houphouette Boigny hosts the 2nd Ivory Coast National Wushu Tournament for University Students

On June 26th, the University of Felix Houphouette Boigny and the Confucius Institute and the University of Felix Houphouette Boigny Wushu Association co-hosted the Ivory Coast National Wushu Tournament for University Students. More than 50 martial arts practitioners from universities including the University of Felix Houphouette Boigny, Bouake University, Korhogo University, and Nangui Abrogoua University joined to compare their skills.

Honored guests attending the event included Representative for the Minister of Ivory Coast Higher Education and Scientific Research Mr. Sidibe Daouda, Confucius Institute Director Mr. Liu Yunsheng, Ivory Coast National Wushu Association Head Mr. Olivier Azane, and representatives of the various schools participating. Xinhua News Agency, Voice of China (West Africa) Weekly and Ivory Coast local mainstream media made reports on the event.


A glimpse at the competition

After a brief opening ceremony and entrance ceremony, the participants began to compete. The audience of over 300 people watched with extreme fervor, applause and cheers continuously filling the venue.

The competitors all exhibited very high levels of skill and proficiency in a wide array of martial arts weapons. In the “forms” competition, the participants showed off their martial prowess, with styles such as “monkey fist”, “drunken fist” and “mantis fist”. With presence and grace, some of them also cracked a whip, and brandished a spear and a three-section cudgel. In the free combat part, the red and blue teams were pitted against each other, bringing the cheering spectators to a feverish pitch.

During the awards segment, the honored guests entered the competition area to confer the gold, silver, bronze and participation awards to the contestants. Sdibe Daouda, while giving the closing summary, greatly praised the support given by the Confucius Institute to the development of wushu in Ivory Coast, and conferred the special organization award to the Confucius Institute Director Mr. Liu Yunsheng on behalf of the Ivory Coast Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, saying that he hoped the Confucius Institute could continue to offer such support to the development of wushu in Ivory Coast.

According to sources, Chinese martial arts are very popular in Ivory Coast, with numerous public school having established wushu physical education classes. At the University of Felix Houphouette Boigny alone there are over 100 practitioners of kung fu, many of whom are Chinese language students at the CI. Another 200 students from other universities practice wushu as well. Wushu education in Ivory Coast has just recently risen to prominence, and many locals hope that the local CI can aid in further promoting Chinese martial arts.
