On June 24th, the Confucius Institute at University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin held the 2nd Chinese Music Festival, once again filling the campus with its songs. Chinese language majors and members of the Chinese language interest class put on a cultural feast for the eyes and ears, for an audience of over 500 people.

The high-spirited audience

Song with dance performance of “Lift Your Veil”

The music festival began with traditional Benin folk music. The Confucius Institute (CI) band rearranged songs such as “Nanni Bay”, “By Lake Baikal” and “Lift Your Veil”, either in medley form, or with elements of African music, or sung in a rock style, winning waves of applause from the audience. A Chinese audience member who came just for the event, upon hearing the rock version of “Lift Your Veil”, praised the performance, saying, “This version of the song is so interesting!”

Benin song “Love”

In the Benin song “Love”, the students added some Chinese words to the lyrics, namely “Teacher, we love you”, naming each of their CI teachers and expressing their deep feelings for them.

Up next on stage was the CI dance team, who showed the powerful gracefulness of Chinese dance with performances of the sign language dance “Rite”, song and dances “Blue and White Porcelain” and “Song of a Beauty”, while the dance “Youth Training Manual” and musical theater piece “The Dancer in the Dark” were remarkable for their innovation. The audience simply couldn’t hold back their enthusiasm.

Many new faces could be seen among the performers this year. The first-year Chinese language majors and students from the Chinese interest class sang “Flowery March” and “Moonlight over the Lotus Pond”, and performed a Cheongsam fashion show. As the only teacher representative, volunteer teacher Xiao Yinghui won fervent cheers from the audience simply by taking the stage, and while performing won even greater approval.

The day’s event lasted for almost four hours, more than 40 shows performed back to back. As night fell, the music festival came to a close.
