Confucius Institute at Chungbuk National University celebrates its 10th anniversary, South Korea

On the afternoon of July 14th, the ceremony in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute at Chungbuk National University, South Korea, was held at Chungbuk National University (CBNU).

The ceremony officially kicked off with South Korea’s traditional drum performance. A video featuring the ten years of development of the Confucius Institute was then shown to the audience, who were full of all sorts of emotions. Later, at the presentation section, Cui Henglong, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, bequeathed the recently published The Ten Years of History: Confucius Institute at Chungbuk National University to Yoon Yeopyo, President of CBNU. Then, a service award presentation ceremony was held, during which the Chinese Embassy in South Korea presented the medal of gratitude to CBNU, and President Yoon Yeopyo presented medals and prizes of best service to six personnel, including Director Cui Henglong, Prof. Hyeon Jeonghi and the student of the Confucius Institute Jo Namseok.

Later, President Yoon Yeopyo, Jin Xiong, CPC Secretary of Yanbian University, Lee Jaeeon, Director of the Confucius Institute and Ai Hongge, Educational Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in South Korea, delivered their speeches, respectively, in which they all expressed sincere congratulations to the Confucius Institute for its 10th anniversary, highly commended its achievements in the first ten years, and extended their hopes for the future of the Institute.

At the ceremony, the congratulatory letter from Mdm. Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, was read, in which she extended warm congratulations to Confucius Institute at CBNU and reviewed the achievements of cooperation between CBNU and Yanbian University over the past ten years. She also stated that Hanban would continue to provide full support for the development of Confucius Institute at CBNU and wished a brighter future of the Institute. Then, congratulatory videos from Lee Sijong, Governor of Chungcheongbuk-do (North Chungcheong Province), Jeong Utaek, member of the National Assembly of South Korea and Lee Seonghun, Mayor of Cheongju City, were also played.

The Student Art Troupe of Yanbian University and Alumni Association of the Confucius Institute presented wonderful art performances at the ceremony. A variety of programs by the Student Art Troupe of Yanbian University, such as the traditional dances Jasmine Flower and A Hundred Flowers Blossoming, song Great China, Peking OperaOde to Pear Blossom and Guzheng, won waves of applause and cheers from the audience.

Members of the Alumni Association of the Confucius Institute performed the song Cheongju Welcomes You and traditional Chinese costume show. In the song Cheongju Welcomes You adapted from the universally famous song Beijing Welcomes You, the fully passionate chorus singing by the students of the Confucius Institute moved all the audience.

The Chinese folk costume show by 3 volunteer Chinese teachers and some 40 students of the Confucius Institute pushed the ceremony to its climax. Designed by themselves, this show included Chinese poem recitation, dances of several Chinese ethnic groups such as Mongolia, Dong and Qiang, Peking Opera Su-San Under Police Escort and dance Little Apple. Spectacular performances by teachers and students of the Confucius Institute won thunderous applause from the audience. Counselor Ai Hongge said with great excitement, “This is the best show I have ever seen and I am greatly moved!”

On the same day of the ceremony, the Confucius Institute also held the Young Scholars Forum of “Future and Cooperation of China-South Korea International Relations” and the Photo Exhibition of Ten Years of Achievements of the Confucius Institute at CBNU titled “Pre-destiny, Companionship, Perfectionism”.

It is learned that established in September 2006, the Confucius Institute at CBNU was the first one launched at a university in South Korea. At the beginning of its operation, it only enrolled 36 students. At present, around 10,000 students have applied for learning at the Institute every year.
