On April 19th, Mdm. Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, met with the teachers and students of Australia’s Ravenswood School for Girls at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

It was time of guyu (Grain Rain) according to the 24 solar terms of China, and Diaoyutai State Guesthouse was full of greeneries and vitality. In a merry atmosphere, Mdm. Peng Liyuan, together with the teachers and students, recalled her visit to Ravenswood School for Girls back in 2014. She also watched the photos of their study trip to China, enjoyed the performances by the students, and listened to what the representatives of the teachers and students had experienced and perceived during their trip.

Mdm. Peng said that she still clearly remembered her last visit to their school and she was happy that they made a fruitful and rewarding trip to China. She believed that this visit offered them a good opportunity to appreciate China’s picturesque natural sceneries and long-standing history and culture and to make many Chinese friends, which would certainly help deepen their understanding of China. She also encouraged the students to make the best of their youth to read and travel more extensively so as to learn the Chinese language and culture and contribute more to the friendship between Chinese and Australian people.

Speaking highly of the robust development of educational exchanges between China and Australia in recent years, Mdm. Peng hoped that both sides would further expand mutual exchanges of students so as to produce more successors to the cause of China-Australia friendship. She added that, as UNESCO Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education, she was fully aware of the importance of education for girls. She also encouraged the students to work together with her to ensure access to education for more girls in the world so they can enjoy a happy life.

The Deputy Principal, teachers and students of the Ravenswood School for Girls expressed their honor to receive Prof. Peng Liyuan at their school two years ago. This time, with great excitement, they toured around China, where they visited the Great Wall and the Terra-Cotta Warriors, saw pandas at a close distance, and tasted Chinese delicious cuisine. They were all greatly impressed by China’s long history and profound culture and fell in love with the nation. The students expressed their wishes to work hard on their Chinese language and make contributions to the promotion of Australia-China friendship in the future.

Established in 1901, Ravenswood School for Girls is a comprehensive girls’ school with a kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school and high school. It also hosts a Confucius Classroom and organizes study trips to China for students every year. In November 2014, during President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Australia, Mdm. Peng Liyuan paid a visit to the Confucius Classroom at this school.
