On the morning of April 11th, Nottingham Confucius Institute China Ningbo Branch, namely the Ningbo branch of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nottingham, the UK, was officially established at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), which is the very first branch of a Confucius Institute in Chinese mainland. Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban; Professor Yang Fujia, President of UNNC; Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham; Professor Chris Rudd, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the UNNC as well as other delegates attended this event.

Professor Chris Rudd began his remark in fluent Chinese. “I’m not only the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the UNNC but also a student of the Confucius Institute. I’m really glad that we will host a Confucius Institute here at the UNNC”, he said.

“To date, the UNNC has over 600 international students and 80% of its academic staff are from overseas. The establishment of the Confucius Institute at the UNNC will help them and their families better learn the Chinese language and Chinese culture”, said Professor Rudd.

While addressing the event, Madam Xu Lin stated that the Confucius Institute Headquarters would lend full support to the development of Nottingham Confucius Institute China Ningbo Branch, and firmly believed that it would surely make groundbreaking achievements at the time of innovation and internationalization.

Professor Yang Fujia echoed Madam Xu and expressed his utter confidence in Nottingham Confucius Institute China Ningbo Branch.

According to sources, Professor Shujie Yao, former Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nottingham, will serve as the Director of the newly established Nottingham Confucius Institute China Ningbo Branch, which plans to enroll up to 500 students this year and will eventually become a training center for Confucius Institute teachers.

“This is a great and exciting opportunity for the UNNC to be more integrated into the Chinese community and to play an increasingly important role in making higher education more global”, said Director Shujie Yao.
