Major cultural documentary series Going West and Coming East set to air
Major cultural documentary series Going West and Coming East will air every evening from April 14-19 at 20:00, during prime time, on the CCTV Documentary Channel (CCTV-9).
Going West and Coming East is a production of Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), and is the first documentary series to explore the history of cultural and linguistic exchange between east and west, as well as the first to show how Chinese language and culture is promoted abroad. The series is split into six 50-minute episodes entitled “The Strength of Language”, “The Destiny of Culture”, “The Footsteps of Spring”, “The Greatest Form Has No Shape”, “Beautiful Differences”, and “Calling of the Future”.
Against the backdrop of modern trends in human development, Going West and Coming East examines the journey of the Confucius Institute from the perspective of cultural and linguistic exchange between east and west through following the footsteps of the British Council, the French Alliance Francaise, the Goethe Institute, Cervantes College and other Western language promotion organizations as they were established and spread, exposing the hidden relationships between language, culture and the rise and fall of nations.
Going West and Coming East lays out a panorama view of the recent history of how China’s language and culture have gone out into the world. It looks at the process of how the Confucius Institute, in just 10 short years, has grown from a nearly unknown organization to becoming a broad enterprise developing across many fields. It also tells the moving stories of countless people from China and all over the world who, through teaching or learning Chinese and cultural exchange, have experienced “chemical reactions” with China in their thoughts or in their lives, and woven their tales through person-to-person and heart-to-heart connection. All of these demonstrate how the Confucius Institute, through Chinese and cultural exchange, is building the “heart-to-heart high speed rail link” between China and people of every nation that will make Chinese culture more influential internationally, and will encourage each of the world’s diverse civilizations to play their own unique role in global development.
Going West and Coming East took almost two years to produce, and was created by the same production team behind other major documentaries like The Rise of the Great Powers, Shanxi Merchants, and Five Thousand Years of Chinese Characters with Ninth and Tenth NPC Standing Committee Vice Chairman and noted linguist Xu Jialu serving as the film’s chief production consultant. The film crew visited the USA, the UK, Australia, Japan, Thailand, Poland, Egypt, Tanzania, Bolivia, and over 50 countries and areas to shoot and conduct interviews with more than 200 internationally known university presidents, famous experts and scholars, and the Chinese and Foreign Directors, teachers, and volunteers at Confucius Institutes, documenting and displaying in rich detail and images the latest educational successes of the Institute, and presenting to the audience a brilliantly-produced and surprisingly engaging feast of culture.
