Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhang Dejiang visits the Confucius Institute at University of Zambia

On March 21st, local time, accompanied by Zambian Vice President Inonge Wina, Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), visited the Confucius Institute at University of Zambia and attended the ceremony of the hand-over of the new building of the Confucius Institute and book donation.

Chairman Zhang Dejiang came to a Chinese language class at the Confucius Institute and conducted cordial exchanges with the Chinese language teacher and students there. He inquired the teacher of the Chinese language teaching and students’ learning and listened to the report on Chinese language teaching by the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute. Chairman Zhang, while fully commending the positive role of the Confucius Institute in facilitating Zambian people to learn Chinese language and culture and promoting cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, expressed his sincere congratulations to the Confucius Institute on its efforts and remarkable achievements in incorporating the Chinese language into the national education system for tertiary and secondary education institutions in Zambia.

Towards the end, Chairman Zhang Dejiang and his delegation attended the ceremony of the hand-over of the new building of the Confucius Institute and book donation at the library of the Confucius Institute. Chairman Zhang handed the key of the building and a booklist of 3,000 books to Vice President Inonge Wina, who in turn thanked the Chinese government for its assistance and hoped that the China-Zambia friendship would last forever.

The Confucius Institute at University of Zambia, established in July 2010, has offered a degree program of Chinese language at the University of Zambia and is collaborating with the Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education of Zambia in conducting pilot Chinese language teaching programs at ten secondary schools in ten provinces. By 2015, the Confucius Institute had 7,430 registered students and had held over 800 various cultural events, receiving a total of around 50,000 participants. The new building of the Confucius Institute, financed and constructed by the Ministry of Commerce of China, also known as the second teaching building of the Confucius Institutes in Africa constructed by the Chinese government, has a total construction area of more than 6,000 m2 and provides facilities such as language labs, meeting rooms, libraries, and multi-function rooms.

During the visit, the Chinese and foreign guests also watched the splendid performances prepared by the Confucius Institute. At the end, Chairman Zhang Dejiang and Vice President Inonge Wina jointly planted a tree of friendship at the Confucius Institute and took a group photo together.
