During the evening of January 30th, the auditorium at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, University of Belgrade was alive with cheering and excitement as the Chinese New Year Gala, organized jointly by the Confucius Institute in Belgrade and the Chinese Embassy in Serbia, took place. In the audience were the Chinese ambassador to Serbia, Li Manchang, and the cultural counsellor, Xu Hong, amongst others.

The majority of entertainment at the event was put on by the Confucius Institute in Belgrade along with students from the Chinese classes of various middle schools, primary schools and kindergartens across Serbia. The performances left a lasting impression amongst the audience, especially so for the Chinese members who were regaled with renditions of such classic and familiar Chinese songs as Happy Chinese New Year, Hulunbuir Prairie, I Love You China, As Sweet As Honey, You Exist in My Song, and Mom Is The Best In The World. The evening’s other entertainment included two Serbian sisters whose elegant tea ceremony performance brought a refined atmosphere heady with the scent of fresh tea leaves, a thrilling Taiji performance by members of a local martial arts club which included Taijiquan and Taiji Sword, and a mesmerizing display of Sichuan Opera ‘face changing’ by local amateur enthusiast Djordje, which was truly a feast for the audience.>

The Confucius Institute’s Year of the Monkey New Year Gala is just one of a series of events organized as part of Serbia’s 2016 Chinese New Year celebrations. Over the coming ten or so days, various places in Serbia will be holding art events, picture and film exhibitions, amongst many other cultural activities.
