The first Confucius Institute opens in Equatorial Guinea
On January 25, the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute at National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE) was held. Partnered with Zhejiang International Studies University, this Confucius Institute was co-founded by UNGE and Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) as the very first of its kind in Equatorial Guinea.

Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, sent a congratulatory letter. According to Madam Xu, this year marks the 46th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Equatorial Guinea and the establishment of UNGE Confucius Institute marks a new milestone in the history of China-Equatorial Guinea friendly exchanges. With the concerted efforts of the two countries, the UNGE Confucius Institute would develop into an important platform for local students and residents to study Chinese language and culture and make new contributions to promoting the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.
UNGE Rector Mr. Filiberto Ntutumu Nguema noted that he felt glad UNGE could become the host university of the Confucius Institute. In close cooperation with Zhejiang International Studies University, UNGE would spare no effort to help the Confucius Institute grow into a bridge of cultural communication between China and Equatorial Guinea, he said.

Mr. Zhao Hongsheng, Chinese Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, said that Equatorial Guinea is one of China’s important partners in Africa, and that the relations between the two countries have been upgraded to a comprehensive partnership. The bilateral cooperation in various fields has been deepening and people-to-people exchanges have been growing frequently. He remarked that the China-Equatorial Guinea cultural and educational exchanges would start a new chapter thanks to the establishment of the UNGE Confucius Institute.
Mr. Hong Gang, President of Zhejiang International Studies University, said that the university would cooperate with UNGE to strive to meet the need of the people in Equatorial Guinea to study Chinese, to enhance their understanding of Chinese language and culture, to facilitate cultural and educational exchanges between China and Equatorial Guinea and thus to promote the development of diverse cultures in the world.
