Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and EU Commissioner Tibor Navracsics inaugurate Confucius Classroom at European Schools (Brussels) at the third meeting of China-EU HPPD
On September 15, Vice Premier of China’s State Council Liu Yandong co-chaired the third meeting of China-EU High-Level People-to-People Dialogue (HPPD) with Tibor Navracsics, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport in Brussels. In her speech, Madam Liu spoke highly of the remarkable achievements in people-to-people exchange between China and the EU.
Madam Liu noted that the past 40 years had witnessed increasing people-to-people exchange between the two sides since China established diplomatic relations with the EU. Last year, the number of people in terms of personnel exchanges between China and the EU reached close to six million, larger than that between China and the US for the first time. On average, approximately 70-odd flights, altogether 16,000 people, traveled between China and the EU countries per day. Now there are 560 pairs of sister provinces or cities between China and the EU countries. Thriving people-to-people exchange benefits the peoples’ lives on both sides and enhances mutual understanding of each other’s rich culture and history.
Madam Liu said that communication and cooperation between China and the EU have had yielded fruitful results, in particular since the establishment of the HPPD. Concerning education, with a growing number of Chinese and EU students and scholars participating in the exchanges, some 330,000 people have gone to each other’s countries for study; cooperation in language teaching has achieved great success; universities and colleges in China can offer courses of the 24 EU official and working languages, and Confucius Institutes and Classrooms are blooming in Europe; cross-border higher educational programs of high quality have increased, and joint training projects have scored new achievements.
