Local directors of Confucius Institutes explore Chinese culture in Xiamen

On August 2nd, the 2015 In-service Training Workshop for Confucius Institute Directors was officially inaugurated at Xiamen University. A total of 26 local directors of Confucius Institutes in 18 countries, including the U.S., the U.K. and Belarus, attended the opening ceremony of this 9-day workshop. Mr. Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director General of Hanban, and Ms. Zhan Xinli, Vice President of Xiamen University, also attended and addressed the opening ceremony.

At the opening ceremony

While addressing the event, Mr. Ma Jianfei, on behalf of Madam Xu Lin, first sent his warm welcome and greetings to all the participating directors. He then elaborated the significant values of the Confucius Institute in fostering the development of Chinese departments at host universities, cooperation between Chinese and foreign universities and economic and trade cooperation between China and host countries, as well as in strengthening the understanding and friendship among people of different countries and promoting world peace. He pointed out that in its future development, the Confucius Institute should adhere to the idea of cooperation and mutual benefit and explore the path of “meeting local needs and interests and developing distinctive features”. The Confucius Institute is a joint endeavor requiring support from both the Chinese side and the foreign side, and the support from the foreign side is more indispensable. He hoped that everyone should better perform their duty as local directors to ensure the sustainable development of the Confucius Institute and promote frequent and multi-dimensional exchange, interaction and cooperation at various levels between Chinese and host universities.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Zhan Xinli expressed her hope that the directors who traveled long distance to attend this workshop would satisfactorily return to their posts after acquiring better understanding of the Confucius Institute and solutions to the problems in the development of the Confucius Institute.

Ms. Yanjmaa Jutmaan, Chancellor of Khovd University in Mongolia, delivered a speech on behalf of all the directors. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Confucius Institute Headquarters and said that this workshop would offer a good opportunity for the directors to share experience, learn from each other and expand friendship, and the sharing of opinions and exchanges of ideas would certainly bring more benefits to the sustainable development of the Confucius Institute.  

This year’s workshop consists of four roundtables, two seminars and seven talks. The roundtables mainly focus on the key projects of the Confucius Institute like finance, teaching materials and teaching staff, and the seminars mostly discuss issues like the planning of key projects of the Confucius Institute, sharing of experience and the development of the Confucius Institute in the next ten years. As for the talks, a number of renowned scholars are invited to give talks on a wide range of topics, such as Chinese economic and social development, mass communication, culture and religion, traditional Chinese costumes and tea culture, acupuncture of traditional Chinese medicine, and so on. During the workshop, the directors will also conduct field trips to experience Hakka culture of Fujian Province.
