Both ULB and VUB belonged to the former Free University of Brussels (FUB) established in 1834. In 1970, FUB was officially split into ULB with French as the major medium of instruction and VUB with Dutch. Both universities are world-renowned research-oriented universities.

The Chinese partner institution for the Confucius Institute at ULB is East China Normal University and that for the Confucius Institute at VUB are Renmin University of China and Sichuan University.

Before these two, four Confucius Institutes have been established in Belgium, namely the Confucius Institute in Brussels, the Confucius Institute in Liege, the Confucius Institute at GROUP T (International University College Leuven) and the Confucius Institute at University College West Flanders.
