Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky and Shandong Friendship Publishing House jointly establish the “Nishan Library”

On May 22nd, a group of 4 guests from the University of Kentucky, led by Dr. Xiu Huajing, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky, visited Shandong Friendship Publishing House. Members of the delegation included Mr. Stephen Michael Wrinn, Director of the University Press of Kentucky; Ms. Mary Beth Thomson, Senior Associate Dean of Libraries at the University of Kentucky; Ms. Catherine Patricia Seago, Director of Acquisitions of Libraries at the University of Kentucky. Mr. Chi Yun, Editor-in-Chief of Shandong Publishing Group, met with members of the delegation.

During their visit, members of the University of Kentucky delegation and Shandong Friendship Publishing House conducted further in-depth discussion on the scheme to launch the Nishan Library in Kentucky. Both sides finalized the cooperation agreement for the Nishan Library in Kentucky and unanimously agreed to establish this Library at the Libraries of the University of Kentucky, which will permanently keep the books of the Nishan Library in Kentucky and provide certificates for the books. At the same time, both sides will jointly launch a digital Nishan Library in Kentucky. The Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky will continue to work with the University Press of Kentucky, the Libraries at the University of Kentucky and Nishan Forum, the sinological organization of the University, so as to expand the Nishan Forum initiated by Mr. Xu Jialu to Middle America.

Since the state of Kentucky always enjoys a reputation of “Capital of Horses”, members of the University Press of Kentucky explored issues of importing relevant copyrights of books on horse culture with Shandong Friendship Publishing House. Mr. Stephen Michael Wrinn, Director of the University Press of Kentucky, also expressed keen interests in books on spectacular traditional Chinese culture like Qilu Intangible Cultural Heritage Series and A History of Chinese Fashion published by Shandong Friendship Publishing House and agreed to further discuss the details of copyright cooperation. Finally, the University Press of Kentucky and Shandong Friendship Publishing House jointly held the signing ceremony for strategic cooperation, which ushered a sound beginning for in-depth cooperation between the two sides in the future.

In order to facilitate the collaboration between the University of Kentucky and Shandong Friendship Publishing House, Dr. Xiu Huajing, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky, made a special visit to Shandong Friendship Publishing House just before the Confucius Institute Conference held in December 2014, which laid a sound foundation for their successful cooperation this time.

The Nishan Library in Kentucky was the second one in the U.S. and the first one was established at the University at Buffalo SUNY in New York.

Nishan is located in Shandong, China, and is the birthplace of Confucius, the great thinker and educator in ancient China. Confucius and Confucianism have exerted highly significant influence on Chinese culture, oriental civilizations and even the whole world. A leading official of Shandong International Culture Association says that the Nishan Library, which is named after the birthplace of Confucius, aims at showcasing books on outstanding achievements of Chinese and foreign civilizations, conducting international cooperation in publication, and promoting dialogues between Chinese and foreign cultures.
