First Confucius Institute in Côte d'Ivoire officially inaugurated

On May 28th, the Confucius Institute at the University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Côte d'Ivoire held its official inauguration ceremony. This Confucius Institute was jointly established by the University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Côte d'Ivoire and China’s Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), with Tianjin University of Technology as its partner university in China.

Around 800 guests attended this ceremony, including Zhang Guoqing, Chinese Ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire; Bakayoko Ly Ramata, President of the University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny; and Jing Hongyang, President of Tianjin University of Technology.

Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, sent a congratulatory letter for this event. In the letter, she said, “With the joint efforts by both sides, this Confucius Institute will certainly become a vital platform for the local public to learn Chinese language and understand Chinese culture, which will promote the educational and cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries and make outstanding contributions to strengthening the mutual understanding and friendship between the people of the two countries.”

Speaking at the event, Bakayoko Ly Ramata, President of the University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny, said, “This Confucius Institute will certainly serve as a window to showcase the University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny to the outside world and a platform for cooperation between Côte d'Ivoire and China. The establishment of the Institute will enhance the mutual understanding and communication between the youth in both countries and lay a solid foundation for our friendship.”

In his speech at the ceremony, Ambassador Zhang said that since 2008, at the request of Côte d'Ivoire, China has started to send teachers to teach Chinese language and culture here, and the exchanges in education and culture between the two countries have been maintained until today. He hoped that the Confucius Institute at the University of Félix Houphouët-Boigny would play its role as a bridge for the cultural exchange to make its own contributions to strengthening the friendship between the two peoples.

Jing Hongyang, President of Tianjin University of Technology, hoped that both sides would conduct closer collaboration by complementing each other’s advantages and sharing resources so as to provide high-quality teaching resources and organize more cultural events.

Also at the ceremony, teachers and students of the University presented some performances with strong characteristics of Chinese culture, which livened up the atmosphere at the event and won continuous applause from the audience.
