On April 10th, 2015, the Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza held a culture talk titled “The Book of Changes and the Mysterious China” at Sapienza University of Rome. This talk was given by Prof. Salviati from the Department of Oriental Studies of Sapienza University of Rome and attended by around 40 people, including students of the University of Rome La Sapienza and some members of local communities.

Prof. Salviati specializes in studying oriental arts. His interest in the Book of Changes originated from his study on bronze ware and jade pieces in ancient China. This talk covered three major topics, namely, a brief introduction to the Book of Changes, the culture of worshipping heaven and the influence of the Book of Changes. In his talk, Prof. Salviati offered in-depth elaboration of issues on these three topics, such as the completion of the Book of Changes, the Book of Changes and divination culture in Shang Dynasty, the Book of Changes and the worship of heaven and earth in Shang Dynasty, the Book of Changes and archeological discoveries in China, the influence of the Book of Changes in Europe, and so on.

After his talk, many of the audience asked Prof. Salviati questions about the culture of worshipping heaven in ancient China and the numbers in the Book of Changes. An elder student who studies at the Confucius Institute at University of Rome La Sapienza for many years said, “It is such an interesting talk. I hadn’t realized that there were so much in common between ideas in the study of heaven and the divination culture in the Book of Changes and astrological studies in our western religions. I will definitely buy an Italian version of the Book of Changes as soon as I get back home today.”
