On April 4, in the presence of Thai Princess HRH Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Prof. Pirom Kamolratanakul, President of Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University (CU) renewed the agreement on the joint establishment of the Confucius Institute with Prof. Zhu Shanlu, Council Chairman of China’s Peking University (PKU) at the PKU Yingjie Exchange Center.

The attendees of the signing ceremony included Mr. Theerakun Niyom, Thai Ambassador to China, Mr. Guan Mu, former Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Dr. Li Yansong, PKU Vice President, Dr. Propod Assavavirulhakarn, Thai Director of the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University (CICU), Prof. Fu Zengyou, CICU senior advisor and Dr. Han Shenglong, CICU Chinese Director.

The agreement set a new goal: CU and PKU should work hard hand in hand to make the CICU, jointly established by the two sides, one of the Model Confucius Institutes in the world.

On March 26, 2007, Princess Sirindhorn inaugurated the CICU herself and inscribed the Chinese proverb “任重道远” (literally meaning ‘the task is arduous and the road long’) to encourage the CICU to take on the vital role in promoting the cultural exchange between China and Thailand. The CICU adopts a system in which the directors, under the leadership of the Board of Directors which shall make major fundamental policies, shall assume the main responsibility for the Institute’s daily operation and administration. The CICU has been twice rated as one of the Confucius Institutes of the Year since its establishment.
