In the evening of March 5th, local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, was decorated with lanterns, full of festive mood. A Lantern Festival Party called “Celebrating Lantern Festival Together” was held there. Counsellor Xia Guoshun of Chinese Embassy and students from universities and secondary schools attended this splendid cultural party.

In the party, people enjoyed very much traditional Chinese customs such as appreciating lanterns and the moon, guessing lantern riddles and eating sweet dumplings, which were specially prepared by the Confucius Institute. The Chinese and Jamaicans sat together like a family to celebrate this wonderful festival harmoniously.

The party took reunion as the theme to connect sweet dumplings, New Year, Chinese langauge, lantern riddles and lanterns together. Lantern riddles written on colorful ribbons danced with the festive music in the wind, which created the traditional and romantic Chinese flavor of the Lantern Festival. The fragrant sweet dumplings and the dance of Selling Sweet Dumplings touched Jamaicans and stirred the sweetness of Lantern Festival deep in their hearts. A song Happy New Year aroused endless imagination or reminiscence among the audience to the Chinese New Year. The ensemble of erhu and guzheng displayed the profound cultural foundation of China. Different music instruments did not stop Jamaicans from resonating to the music. This is just music without borders. All the Jamaican students found something in common when hearing a popular Internet song written by foreigners I am sorry. My Chinese is bad. The dancing performance Good Luck made local people experience the charm of Chinese dancing through. They were surprised to find that Chinese dance could be so beautiful and soul-stirring.

A song, a dance, a bowl of sweet dumplings, a string of lanterns composed a genuine Chinese party. The audience not only remembered those Chinese terms like “the Lantern Festival”, “reunion”, “lanterns”, “erhu” and “guzheng”, they also experienced the charm of Chinese culture.
