At 3pm on Feb 22th, 2015 American time, SCSU CI held a big celebration for the Chinese New Year in Ritsche Auditorium on the university campus. An opening ceremony for CI’s three new Confucius Classrooms was held prior to the dance performance. American director of the SCSU CI, Dr. Kathryn Johnson, and Chinese director Madame Lixin Zhou, hosted the celebration together. President of SCSU Dr. Earl H. Potter, III, Superintendent Dr. Daniel Bittman from Sauk Rapids-Rice Schools, Superintendent Dr. Willie Jett from St. Cloud School District and Principal Cam Hedland from Lakes International Language Academy, were all present for the ceremony. More than 600 hundred people from SCSU and the community attended the celebration, including numerous children from Chinese Immersion Programs.

President Potter shared New Year’s greetings first about the achievements the SCSU Confucius Institute has made during the last year and encouraged staff and students at SCSU to take part in the activities held by CI to further promote global learning and understanding of Chinese language and culture. In the following, President Potter, with the two Superintendents and Principal unveiled the three plaques for the three CI’s Confucius Classrooms. This was followed by the Chinese Asian Association of Minnesota (CAAM) Dance Troupe that performed numerous, beautiful dances, such as Red Lantern and Blossoming Rivals in Beauty. The dancers’ graceful, magical movements continued to impress the audience time after time. The last Lion Dance, performed by the SCSU China Student and Scholar Association, was a great end to a grand event that delighted all.

The local St. Cloud Times Newspaper and SCSU Student UTVS shared positive news reports on the event. Many from the local community agreed that it was the largest and best Chinese New Year activity in St. Cloud. Chinese director Lixin Zhou commented after the event, “SCSU CI built one more friendly bridge for cross-cultural communication between America and China last year, and we will redouble efforts to make the bridge stronger in the new year.”
