On January 19, the International Teachers College of Chinese Language and Culture was officially established at East China Normal University (ECNU). Affiliated with the Institute of Global Chinese Language Teacher Education at ECNU, the very first of its kind set up by Hanban in a domestic university, this college is committed to training and providing Chinese language teachers for Confucius Institutes all over the globe.

Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, remarked at the inaugural ceremony that it had been a decade since the first Confucius Institute was established overseas in 2004. To date, there are over 470 Confucius Institutes in 127 countries and regions, and 200-plus universities in over 70 countries are applying for the establishment of Confucius Institutes. Therefore, Confucius Institutes are in dire need of a large number of local Chinese language teachers in the next decade.

“The international sustainable development of Confucius Institutes depends upon the quality of Chinese language teachers,” said Madam Xu Lin. At present Confucius Institutes have altogether over 10,000 teachers worldwide, but new teachers are always needed. Qualified teachers should have a good knowledge of the Chinese and foreign languages and the ability to fit into the cultural and social environment of different continents and even different countries. Thus, they can better spread Chinese culture overseas and meet the need for a growing number of Chinese language teachers on a global scale.

Months ago, Hanban established the Academy for Confucius Institute Directors at Xiamen University. However, ECNU is one of the earliest educational institutions that offers Chinese education for foreign students in China. The Institute of Global Chinese Language Teacher Education at ECNU has already trained 458 postgraduate students in MTCSOL over the past six years.

Madam Xu Lin also noted that Hanban adopts a “quality assessment” system that applies to all Confucius Institutes around the globe, and any unqualified institute will be shut down.
