First Confucius Institute in Uganda inaugurated

On Dec. 19th, 2014, the first Confucius Institute in Uganda, co-established by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and Makerere University was officially inaugurated. The Chinese partner university of this Confucius Institute is Xiangtan University, Hunan Province. Around 500 guests attended this opening ceremony, including Mr. Zhao Yali, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda; Prof. Zhang Jing, CPC Party Secretary of Xiangtan University; Mr. Vincent Nyanzi, Representative of the Vice President of Uganda and State Minister in the Office of the Vice President; Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, Chancellor of Makerere University; Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu, Vice Chancellor of Makerere University; teachers and students of Makerere University; representatives from Chinese-funded institutions in Uganda; and representatives of overseas Chinese in local communities.

Ambassador Zhao delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. He first congratulated on the inauguration of this Confucius Institute. Then he expressed that the last few years had witnessed the rapid development of China-Uganda relations and the two countries had obtained great accomplishments in political, economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation. Along with the increasingly frequent contact between the two countries, people in Uganda become more enthusiastic in learning Chinese. This Confucius Institute will provide a good platform for people in Uganda to learn Chinese language and explore Chinese culture.

The inauguration ceremony

Speaking at the ceremony, Party Secretary Zhang Jing said that Xiangtan University and Makerere University had made outstanding achievements in cooperation under the 20+20 Cooperation Plan of Chinese and African Institutions of Higher Education. The establishment of this Confucius Institute will be a new starting point and the two universities will strive together for a better development of this Institute. After that, Mr. Chu Maoming, Political Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, read the congratulatory letter on the establishment of this Confucius Institute from Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban.

Then, on behalf of the Vice President of Uganda H. E. Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Mr. Vincent Nyanzi addressed the ceremony and congratulated on the inauguration of the Confucius Institute. He also encouraged young people in Uganda to be more enthusiastic in learning Chinese language and culture so as to learn from China's experience of successful development.

Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of Makerere University both expressed their gratitude towards Hanban, Chinese Embassy in Uganda and Xiangtan University for their generous support and assistance in establishing this Confucius Institute and stated that they will do their best for a better development of this Institute.

After the ceremony, local students of the Confucius Institute and overseas Chinese in Uganda staged some wonderful artistic performances for the guests.
