On November 24, 2014, the Confucius Institute at the University of Lisbon held a cultural activity at the Foundation of Casa de Macau in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, introducing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to the public in Portugal.

Zhu Li, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Lisbon said, “TCM is an important part of traditional Chinese culture. I hope this event can be an eye-opening experience for more people in Portugal to know about TCM theories, acupuncture and moxibustion treatments, which are different from Western medical treatments.”

Tang Fang and Liu Rong, two experienced traditional Chinese physicians from Tianjin Medical University, explained TCM theories to the public and demonstrated some TCM treatments on spot, such as pulse diagnosis and acupuncture.

Ms. Anna, 57-year-old, has had an unexplained swelling and pain on her left leg for nearly a month. She had an X-ray examination at the hospital but no reasons were found. She tried moxibustion treatment for about 15 minutes at the event and felt much better. She told the reporter that she knew a complete course of treatment would be needed for an ideal treatment effect.

It is reported that there are altogether four rounds of such events. In addition to interaction with the public, the two traditional Chinese physicians will also visit the universities in Portugal and have face-to-face communication with students in medical majors.
