Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong presents awards at the 9th Confucius Institute Conference

The opening ceremony of the 9th Confucius Institute Conference was held this morning in Xiamen, Fujian Province. The year of 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute, and it is the very first time that the conference is held outside of Beijing. Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong presented awards to outstanding institutions and individuals at the conference.

A total of 2,000-odd delegates from 126 different countries and regions around the world attended this year’s conference, where four kinds of awards were presented: 2014 Confucius Institute (Classroom) of the Year, 2014 Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence Award, 2014 Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner and Pioneer of Confucius Institute.

Yinghua Academy in Minnesota, U.S. is one of the 2014 Confucius Classroom of the Year award winners. Its CEO/Executive Director Ms. Susan Berg said to reporters, “We adopt an immersion method of language teaching at Yinghua Academy, so subjects such as math, science and social studies are taught in Chinese. Students from kindergarten through the eighth grade all study in a Chinese-speaking environment.”

During the conference, the delegates will hold discussions around fourteen important issues concerning the development of the Confucius Institute. For instance, the contributions and functions of the Confucius Institute in the last decade, the cultural and academic functions of the Confucius Institute, the cultivation and training of local Chinese language teachers, etc. In the past ten years, China has trained some 200,000 local Chinese language teachers for over 100 countries, recruited 25,000 overseas people to study and do research in China, published over 1,300 sets of Chinese language textbooks in 54 languages, set up an internationally recognized HSK test system, and formed an international Chinese language teaching system that covers from pre-school education to higher education, from short-term training to diploma programs. Up to now, 475 Confucius Institutes and 851 Confucius Classrooms have been established in 126 countries and regions around the globe.
