On December 7, the opening ceremony of the 9th Confucius Institute Conference was held in Xiamen, Fujian Province. Madam Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of P.R. China and Chair of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, accentuated in her remarks that the development of the Confucius Institute requires vision, equal cooperation and concerted efforts. She hopes that the Confucius Institute will make new contributions to establishing a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity.

Madam Liu noted that the Confucius Institute, since its establishment ten years ago, has helped build a bridge of communication and mutual understanding between China and other countries to exchange languages and cultures and form an international system of educational communication and cooperation featuring joint construction, ownership, joint management and mutual benefit. She extended her appreciation to the people and parties concerned who had put their effort into making all this possible and presented awards to 80 outstanding collectives and individuals.

Madam Liu said that it is an irresistible trend to deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges and to enhance mutual learning among civilizations in the era of globalization. Indeed, the Confucius Institute belongs to China and to the world as well. In the next coming decade, we need to keep the cultural communication channel open between China and the rest of the world for the convenience of mutual learning and development through promoting localization and enriching exchange forms. We also need to innovate the operational mode for sustainable development of the Confucius Institute.
