2014 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Asia held in Lanzhou

The 2014 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Asia sponsored by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) was held at Lanzhou University from October 27th to 28th, 2014. Experts attending the conference shared their experience of running Confucius Institutes and conducted in-depth discussions on topics like local teachers’ cultivation and training, systematic development of local teaching materials, and performance evaluation of teachers dispatched by the Headquarters.

Participants of the conference including presidents of the host universities of the 14 Confucius Institutes from seven different countries in Central Asia and Transcaucasia, directors of these Confucius Institutes, and presidents of ten Chinese partner universities.

Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, said that Confucius Institutes in Central Asia and Transcaucasia have been developing rapidly in recent years, with a stable increase in the number of students and a continuous improvement in teaching quality. In 2013, the total number of students of Confucius Institutes in these regions reached 24,000 and each Institute had 1,200 students on average, with a year-on-year growth of 33.3%. Confucius Institutes have become important platforms for people in regions like Central Asia to learn Chinese language and culture.

Moreover, conditions for running Confucius Institutes have been improved gradually, local Chinese language teacher training has been strengthened, and activities of cultural exchange have been enriched continuously. The average teaching area per Confucius Institute occupies in Central Asia and Transcaucasia is 583 square meters and a total of over 300 local Chinese language teachers have been trained there. Last year, the Confucius Institutes in these regions held altogether 480 cultural activities with participants reaching 180,000, twice as many as the year before.

Up to now, 468 Confucius Institutes and 715 Confucius Classrooms have been set up in 123 countries and regions. Last year, Confucius Institutes worldwide had a total of 850,000 registered students, opened 40,000 Chinese language classes, and organized about 20,000 cultural activities for more than ten million participants.
