BUCHAREST, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) – The University of Bucharest awarded an honorary doctorate (or ‘Doctor Honoris Causa’ in Romanian) to Madam Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, to commend her exceptional contributions to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Romania.

In her award-presentation speech, Ms. Luminita Balan, Dean of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Bucharest, said that Madam Xu Lin has not only made remarkable contributions to the development of Confucius Institutes in Romania, in particular to the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Bucharest, but also offered considerable help to the university’s Chinese teaching. Professor Vlad Nistor, President of the Senate of the University of Bucharest, conferred the diploma of honorary doctorate upon Madam Xu Lin.

Professor Mircea Dumitru, Rector of the University of Bucharest, said that the Confucius Institute at the University of Bucharest, as the result of joint efforts of the University of Bucharest and China University of Political Science and Law, not only enabled its host university to communicate with its partner university and other Chinese universities but also provided it with golden opportunities to communicate with universities of other countries. Mr. Dumitru added that although the Confucius Institute at the University of Bucharest was the youngest one among the four Confucius Institutes in Romania, it would hold up the other three as examples and work hard to play an important role in popularizing Chinese teaching, spreading Chinese culture and promoting the friendship between China and Romania.

Madam Xu Lin said that it was a symbol of the Romanian people’s friendship to the Chinese that the University of Bucharest awarded an honorary doctorate to her. She hoped that the Confucius Institute at the University of Bucharest, together with the other three Confucius Institutes respectively in Brasov, Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu, could make more efforts to promote Chinese teaching and cultural exchanges between China and Romania.

In the afternoon, Madam Xu Lin paid a visit to the Confucius Institute at the University of Bucharest in company with Chinese Ambassador to Romania Huo Yuzhen. Ms. Xu praised the achievements made by the Confucius Institute in a single year, and she encouraged everyone to keep the momentum going.

On October 17, Madam Xu Lin received an honorary doctorate of Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu. She also received an honorary doctorate of Babes Bolyai University in 2011.
