A judge of the competition examining the tea of contestants

On July 19th and 20th, 2014, the preliminary round of the 2nd Tea Art Competition of the Ural region was held at the Radio Confucius Classroom at Russian State Vocational Pedagogical University (RSVPU). Attendees of this event included Mr. Li Bingguo, Counselor for Education of the Chinese Consulate General in Yekaterinburg, students of the tea art class of the Confucius Classroom, and professional tea art experts and tea art fans from other cities of the Ural region. There were three sections in this competition, Kung Fu Tea, innovations in tea art and guessing tea from their tastes, in which the contestants will compete with each other as individuals. A total of 36 contestants from five cities of the Ural region participated in this competition and nearly 200 tea art fans watched the competition. In the competition, the contestants demonstrated the brewing processes of 73 types of tea, such as Jinjunmei black tea, Dong Ding Oolong tea, Tie Guanyin tea (Iron Buddha), Lapsang Sauchong, Dahongpao tea (literally: Big Red Robe), white tea, Pu'er tea, Dianhong tea, Jasmine tea, Longjing tea, fruit tea, and so on. In addition, they also showed various innovative blooming tea with distinct Russian features and European flavors. Judges of the competition graded the contestants based on their brewing skills, taste of tea water, performance of tea brewing skills, tea etiquettes, tea art explanation, and tea table setup. After fierce competition for about two days, a total of seven prize winners outstood from the participants, including two first-prize winners, one winner for best traditional tea art skills, one winner for best potentials, one winner for best brewing skills, one winner for best innovation, and one winner for best popularity. This competition won wide attention and was covered by major media in Yekaterinburg, including Russian TV, 4th Channel, Ural TV Station, Russian Newspaper, What’s The Fashion magazine, and Hast Media.
