Launch ceremony of the first global ‘Confucius Institute Day’ held

On September 27, the launch ceremony of the first global ‘Confucius Institute Day’ was held in Beijing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of Confucius Institutes. At the ceremony, Madam Liu Yandong, Vice-Premier of the State Council and Chair of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters read the congratulatory letters from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, and expressed her wish that Confucius Institutes, now at a new staring point, would stick to their teaching missions and encourage their characteristic development so as to better meet the need of people from different countries to learn Chinese language and understand Chinese culture and to make positive contributions to facilitating exchanges and mutual learning among different cultures.

The launch ceremony was hosted by Yuan Guiren, Minister of Education and Vice-Chair of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Madam Liu Yandong touched the light-up ball and officially launched the first global ‘Confucius Institute Day’. A total of more than 300 people attended the ceremony, including executive council members and council members of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, 43 foreign diplomatic envoys in China and heads of cultural institutions, presidents of 30 Chinese partner universities of Confucius Institutes, representatives of some Chinese enterprises and representatives of outstanding Chinese language teachers and volunteers from Confucius Institutes, some international students in China and local citizens.

Over 400 university presidents, Confucius Institute directors and institutions from more than 100 countries and regions sent congratulatory letters to extend their support and congratulations to the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

On the day of September 27, close to 1,200 Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) in 123 countries and regions and their Chinese partner universities and institutions hosted over 3,000 various Chinese language and culture experience activities, covering Chinese demonstration classes, exhibitions of Chinese language teaching materials, lectures on Chinese culture, Chinese calligraphy contests, poetry recitals, Chinese movies, art performances by students, etc., which were all cultural feasts for local residents.
