On the evening of September 29, 2014, the Confucius Institute was presented with the “Overseas Influence of the Year” Award at the “First Global Chinese Culture Studies Ceremony 2014: Paying Tribute to Chinese Culture Studies” held in Yuelu Academy, Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province. Yuelu Academy is one of the four most prestigious academies over the last 1,000 years in China.

The “Overseas Influence of the Year” Award is to honor the remarkable achievements of the dissemination of Chinese Culture Studies in countries and regions outside of the Chinese mainland, including but not limited to cultural works, communication institutions, cultural programs and cultural events. These achievements have exerted considerable influence among Chinese or non-Chinese overseas and played an active role in facilitating traditional Chinese culture to “go global”.

The award winners were determined by the following rule: first, recommended lists were sent to the 50 members of the selection board for nomination, and then the names of the nominees were displayed on the Internet. People could vote online, and the final list of winners was the result of both Internet-based vote and expert review.

Mr. Wang Yongli, Deputy Director General of Hanban, noted that the Confucius Institute should owe its award to the strong support of domestic and foreign governments at all levels and institutions and to the selfless dedication and hard work of Confucius Institute directors, Chinese language teachers and volunteers.
